julep

Frosted Southern cocktail

A julep is a sweet drink, especially one used as a vehicle for medicine.

The word now primarily evokes the mint julep—bourbon, sugar, and fresh mint over crushed ice, served in a frosted silver cup and associated with the American South: We sipped juleps on the veranda.

The drink is iconic at the Kentucky Derby.
