chicory coffee
New Orleans blend
Chicory coffee is coffee blended with roasted chicory root, which adds a slightly bitter, woody flavor and stretches the coffee supply.
The blend became popular in New Orleans during Civil War blockades when coffee was scarce, and remains associated with that city's café culture: I'll have a chicory coffee and some beignets.
Sometimes called New Orleans coffee.
