claret

Dry French red

Claret is a dry red wine, particularly from the Bordeaux region of France.

The term is more common in British English than American.

By extension, claret describes a dark purplish-red color: a claret velvet curtain.

In British slang, claret means blood, especially from a cut or nosebleed: There was claret everywhere after the fight.
