wassail

Spiced holiday drink

Wassail is a hot spiced drink, traditionally made with ale or wine, associated with Christmas and New Year's celebrations.

The word also refers to the festive drinking and merrymaking itself, or to the toast offered while drinking: We went wassailing through the village.

To wassail is to drink such toasts or go caroling door to door, often in exchange for food or drink.
