jackknifing

Truck bending dangerously

Jackknifing is when a truck and its trailer fold against each other at the hitch, forming a shape like a closing pocketknife.

It typically happens when the trailer swings forward during braking or on slick roads: The semi jackknifed on the icy highway.

The term extends to any similar folding motion—a diver jackknifing in midair, or someone bending sharply at the waist.
