jack-knife

Folding pocket blade

A jack-knife is a folding pocket knife with a blade that folds into the handle.

The name extends to anything that bends sharply at a hinge point: a jack-knife dive involves bending at the waist to touch your toes before straightening.

When a truck jack-knifes, the cab and trailer fold toward each other at a sharp angle, usually during a skid: The rig jack-knifed on the icy highway.
