jack plane
Woodworker's leveling tool
A jack plane is a general-purpose woodworking plane, typically 12 to 17 inches long, used for rough shaping and flattening boards.
It falls between smaller smoothing planes and longer jointer planes in size and function.
The name likely comes from its role as a jack-of-all-trades in the workshop: He squared up the rough lumber with a jack plane before moving to finer work.
