Making slanted edges

Beveling is cutting or shaping an edge at an angle rather than leaving it square.

The term applies to woodworking, glasswork, and metalwork: beveling the edges of a mirror, beveling the board before joining.

A beveled edge catches light differently and can soften sharp corners or create decorative effects.
