internment camp

Wartime holding compound

An internment camp is a facility where people are confined without trial, typically during wartime or political crisis.

Governments have used internment camps to detain civilians considered security risks—most notoriously Japanese Americans during World War II: Over 120,000 people were held in internment camps.

The term is sometimes distinguished from concentration camps, though the line blurs.
