sanctuary city
Immigration-sheltering urban area
A sanctuary city is a municipality that limits cooperation with federal immigration enforcement, typically by declining to hold undocumented immigrants for deportation or restricting information-sharing with immigration authorities.
The term is used approvingly by supporters of immigrant protections and disparagingly by those who view such policies as obstructing law enforcement: San Francisco declared itself a sanctuary city in 1989.
