interlocks
Fits tightly together
Interlocks are safety mechanisms that prevent equipment from operating under unsafe conditions—a machine that won't start unless a guard is in place, or a microwave that shuts off when the door opens.
The word also names the act of interlocking: The interlocks between the gears keep the mechanism synchronized.
In textiles, interlock is a type of double-knit fabric with interlocking stitches on both sides.
