control rods

Nuclear reaction dampeners

Control rods are movable components in a nuclear reactor that absorb neutrons to regulate the fission chain reaction.

Inserting the rods deeper slows the reaction; withdrawing them allows it to accelerate.

In an emergency, control rods drop fully into the reactor core to shut it down—a procedure called a scram.
