FLIR

Infrared imaging system

FLIR stands for forward-looking infrared, a thermal imaging technology that detects heat radiation to create pictures in darkness or through smoke, fog, and other obscurants.

Originally military technology for aircraft and vehicles, FLIR systems now appear in search-and-rescue operations, building inspections, and law enforcement: The helicopter's FLIR picked up the suspect hiding in the woods.

The term sometimes refers to the camera itself.
