redshift
Light wavelength elongation
Redshift is the shift of light toward longer, redder wavelengths when a light source moves away from an observer.
In astronomy, redshift reveals that distant galaxies are receding from us, providing key evidence for the expanding universe: The galaxy's redshift indicates it's billions of light-years away.
The term also applies to light escaping strong gravitational fields (gravitational redshift). (Capitalized Redshift is Amazon's data warehouse service.)
