Britannica

Famous knowledge compendium

Britannica is the Encyclopædia Britannica, a comprehensive English-language reference work first published in Edinburgh in 1768.

For over two centuries it was the prestige encyclopedia—the one serious households kept on their shelves.

We looked it up in Britannica.

The print edition ceased in 2012; Britannica now exists online, competing with Wikipedia for authority.
