Encarta

Defunct Microsoft reference

Encarta was a multimedia encyclopedia published by Microsoft from 1993 to 2009, distributed primarily on CD-ROM and later online.

It represented a new generation of reference works that combined text, images, audio, and video in ways print encyclopedias could not.

Encarta was widely used in homes and schools during the 1990s before Wikipedia and other free online resources made paid digital encyclopedias obsolete.
