ice bridge

Glacial river span

An ice bridge is a natural formation of ice spanning a body of water, allowing passage across.

Rivers and straits may develop ice bridges in winter when surface ice thickens enough to bear weight: The ice bridge across the strait won't form until January.

Ice bridges also form in glaciers, creating precarious spans over crevasses.

The term sometimes describes temporary crossings deliberately created by freezing or reinforcing ice for transport.
