hoarfrost

Dawn's white coating

Hoarfrost is the feathery white ice crystals that form on cold surfaces—grass, windows, tree branches—when water vapor freezes directly from the air without first becoming dew.

It appears on still, clear nights when temperatures drop below freezing: The field was white with hoarfrost at dawn.

The hoar- element means gray or white, as in hoary.
