underbreathing
Speaking very softly
Underbreathing is breathing that is too shallow or insufficient, failing to take in adequate air.
The term appears in meditation and vocal training contexts, where proper breath support matters: The vocal coach identified underbreathing as the cause of her strained high notes.
It can also describe barely audible speech, muttering just under the breath.
