derringers

Tiny concealed firearms

Derringers are small, compact pistols designed for concealment, typically with one or two short barrels and limited ammunition capacity.

Named after 19th-century gunsmith Henry Deringer, they were popular as hideout weapons and backup guns.

The double-r spelling became standard for the generic type: She kept a derringer in her purse.
