indirect fire
Over-the-horizon shelling
Indirect fire is artillery or mortar fire aimed at targets the gunners cannot see, using coordinates, spotters, or electronic targeting rather than line of sight.
The shells arc high and descend on the target: The battalion called in indirect fire on the enemy position.
Contrasts with direct fire, where the shooter aims at a visible target.
