Fur's individual strands
Hairs is simply the plural of hair, but its use reveals something about how we think of hair.
When hair is a mass on someone's head, it's usually singular: She has beautiful hair.
But when individual strands become noticeable or countable, we reach for the plural: I found three hairs in my soup.
The phrase split hairs means to make overly fine distinctions.
If something puts hairs on your chest, it's supposedly invigorating or strengthening.
