areole
Spine-producing cactus bump
Areole has two technical meanings in different fields.
In botany, it refers to the small, cushion-like bumps on cacti from which spines, flowers, and new growth emerge—a distinctive feature that separates cacti from other succulent plants.
In anatomy, areole is a variant of areola, the pigmented ring surrounding a nipple or the colored part of the iris.
The botanical sense is more common in contemporary usage.
