spinnerets

Web-producing body parts

Spinnerets are the organs through which spiders and certain insect larvae produce silk.

Located at the rear of a spider's abdomen, these finger-like appendages extrude liquid protein that hardens into thread on contact with air.

The term also applies to industrial devices that force synthetic material through tiny holes to create fibers like nylon and rayon—the mechanical process imitating the biological one.
