craft guild
Tradespeople's professional organization
A craft guild is a medieval association of artisans in a particular trade—weavers, blacksmiths, goldsmiths, bakers.
Guilds controlled who could practice a craft, set quality standards, regulated prices, and oversaw the progression from apprentice to journeyman to master.
The term now applies to any professional organization of skilled craftspeople: She joined the local craft guild to sell her pottery.
