giant tortoises
Huge shelled reptiles
Giant tortoises are exceptionally large land tortoises found on remote islands, most famously the Galápagos and Seychelles.
They can weigh several hundred pounds and live well over a century.
Their slow metabolism, isolated habitats, and lack of natural predators allowed them to grow to sizes impossible for mainland relatives.
The giant tortoises lumbered across the volcanic landscape.
