scutes

Turtle shell segments

Scutes are the large, thick scales that form protective plates on certain animals.

They cover the shells of turtles and tortoises, the backs of crocodilians, and the feet of birds.

Unlike fish scales, scutes are made of keratin or bone and don't overlap—they fit together like tiles: The alligator's scutes glistened as it surfaced.
