lagoons

Enclosed coastal waters

Lagoons are shallow bodies of water separated from a larger sea or lake by sandbars, barrier islands, or coral reefs.

The term also applies to the calm water enclosed by a ring-shaped coral atoll.

By extension, lagoon describes any shallow pond, especially artificial ones used for sewage treatment or waste settling: The factory's waste lagoon overflowed during the storm.
