box turtles
Dome-shelled land crawlers
Box turtles are small North American land turtles with high-domed shells and a hinged lower shell that closes completely, forming a protective box.
They live in woodlands and meadows, eating insects, berries, and mushrooms.
Unlike most turtles, they spend little time in water.
We found a box turtle crossing the road after the rain.
