single-speed
No shifting needed
Single-speed describes a bicycle or other mechanism with only one gear ratio—no shifting between easier and harder pedaling.
Single-speed bikes are simpler and lighter than multi-gear alternatives, favored by urban cyclists and messengers: I ride a single-speed around the city.
The term applies to any drivetrain without variable gearing.
