paddle shifters

Steering wheel levers

Paddle shifters are levers mounted behind a steering wheel that let drivers change gears without using a clutch pedal or traditional gear lever.

One paddle shifts up, the other down.

Originally from Formula 1 racing, they now appear in sports cars and vehicles with automatic transmissions that offer a manual mode: I used the paddle shifters on the mountain switchbacks.
