gauchos

South American cowboys

Gauchos are the horsemen and cattle herders of the South American pampas, particularly Argentina and Uruguay—roughly equivalent to American cowboys.

The term evokes a romanticized figure of rugged independence and skilled horsemanship.

Gauchos are also wide-legged trousers that end at mid-calf, named for their resemblance to traditional gaucho dress: She wore gauchos and boots.
