yerba

South American infusion

Yerba is Spanish for herb or grass, appearing in English mainly in *yerba mate* (often shortened to just *yerba*)—a caffeinated South American holly whose dried leaves are brewed into a bitter, stimulating tea: I brought back some yerba from Argentina.

The drink is traditionally sipped through a metal straw from a gourd.
