abattoir

Where livestock ends

An abattoir is a slaughterhouse—a facility where animals are killed and processed for meat.

The word is French in origin and sounds more clinical or euphemistic than its English equivalent: The cattle were transported to the abattoir at dawn.

It appears in formal contexts and British English more than American.
