hayloft

Elevated barn storage

A hayloft is the upper level of a barn where hay is stored.

Hay is lighter than grain and benefits from air circulation, so farmers traditionally hoisted it to lofts above livestock stalls.

The hayloft appears in rural fiction as a site for children's play, secret meetings, or romantic encounters: They climbed up to the hayloft to talk in private.
