abattoirs
Meat processing plants
Abattoirs are slaughterhouses—facilities where animals are killed and processed for meat.
The word is French in origin and sounds more clinical or euphemistic than slaughterhouse: The cattle were transported to the abattoir.
British English uses it more frequently than American English, where slaughterhouse predominates.
