custom firmware
User-modified operating system
Custom firmware is software that replaces the original operating system on a device, typically to unlock features the manufacturer restricted or disabled.
Hobbyists install custom firmware on game consoles, routers, smartphones, and other electronics: I put custom firmware on my old PSP to run emulators.
The practice may void warranties or violate terms of service.
