Building exit route
A fire escape is a structure on the outside of a building—typically a metal staircase or ladder—providing an emergency exit route when fire blocks normal exits.
Fire escapes are iconic features of older urban apartment buildings: They sat on the fire escape, watching the street below.
The term also applies to any designated emergency exit path.
