clothesline

Backyard laundry string

A clothesline is a rope or wire strung between two points for hanging laundry to dry: She hung the sheets on the clothesline.

In sports, especially football and hockey, to clothesline someone is to strike them across the neck or chest with an extended arm, knocking them down—the motion resembling running into a taut line.
