equal temperament

Twelve identical semitones

Equal temperament is a system of tuning musical instruments where the octave is divided into twelve equal intervals.

This mathematical compromise allows playing in any key without retuning, though no interval except the octave is perfectly in tune.

Before equal temperament became standard, keyboard instruments sounded better in some keys than others.

The piano is tuned to equal temperament.
