tuning peg

Pitch-altering knob

A tuning peg is a small wooden or plastic pin on a stringed instrument—guitar, violin, ukulele—that adjusts string tension to change pitch.

Turning the peg tightens or loosens the string: The G string keeps slipping because the tuning peg is worn.

Also called a tuning pin or machine head on modern instruments with geared mechanisms.
