shruti
Smallest Indian interval
Shruti is a unit of pitch in Indian classical music, referring to the smallest interval of sound that the human ear can detect.
The term also denotes the microtonal intervals between notes—traditionally numbered at 22 within an octave.
In Hindu philosophy, shruti refers to sacred texts considered to be directly revealed or heard, including the Vedas: The Upanishads are classified as shruti. (Capitalized Shruti is a given name.)
