oil pan

Engine lubricant basin

An oil pan is the reservoir at the bottom of an internal combustion engine that holds lubricating oil.

The oil collects there when the engine is off and circulates through the engine during operation.

Mechanics drain the oil pan during routine oil changes: The drain plug on the oil pan was stripped.
