straight-six

Engine with aligned cylinders

A straight-six is an engine configuration with six cylinders arranged in a single row, as opposed to a V6 where cylinders are split into two angled banks.

The inline arrangement produces inherent mechanical balance, making straight-sixes smooth and refined.

Classic examples powered BMWs and older American cars; the configuration has seen revival in recent years: The new engine is a turbocharged straight-six.
