totaled cars

Beyond economical repair

Totaled cars are vehicles damaged so severely that repair costs exceed their market value.

Insurance companies declare a car totaled—or a total loss—when fixing it makes no economic sense.

The term comes from "total loss" but has become standard in everyday speech: After the accident, they totaled my car.

A totaled car may still be drivable, but it's worth more as salvage than as a repaired vehicle.
