elephant seals
Trunk-nosed marine mammals
Elephant seals are massive marine mammals, the largest of all seals.
Males develop an inflatable, trunk-like proboscis that gives the species its name.
They spend most of their lives at sea but haul out on beaches to breed and molt, forming dense colonies.
Two species exist: northern elephant seals along the Pacific coast of North America, and southern elephant seals in Antarctic and sub-Antarctic waters.
