night watch
Graveyard shift patrol
A night watch is a period of guard duty during nighttime hours, or the person or group keeping such watch.
Historically, night watches patrolled cities before modern police forces existed, calling out the hour and watching for fires or crime.
The term also applies to shipboard duty divisions: He drew the middle night watch.
By extension, any vigilant nighttime observation: keeping a night watch over the sick child.
