drip painting

Flung paint technique

Drip painting is a technique in which paint is dripped, poured, or splattered onto a horizontal canvas rather than applied with brushstrokes.

Associated most closely with Jackson Pollock and abstract expressionism, the method emphasizes gesture, chance, and the physical act of painting itself: The museum's collection includes several drip paintings from the 1950s.
