drift ice

Sea ice moving

Drift ice is sea ice that floats freely, carried by wind and currents rather than attached to shore.

Unlike fast ice, which remains fixed to coastlines, drift ice moves unpredictably and can pose hazards to ships: The vessel changed course to avoid drift ice.

Large accumulations form ice fields or pack ice.
