icehouse

Pre-refrigeration cold storage

An icehouse is a building for storing ice, historically cut from frozen lakes and rivers in winter and packed in insulation to last through summer.

Before mechanical refrigeration, icehouses supplied ice for food preservation and cooling drinks.

The term now sometimes refers to a commercial establishment selling ice or, in some regions, a small heated shelter used for ice fishing.
